چکیده

1 Filler/gap constructions: two approaches Historically, filler/gap constructions such as those in (1) have been approached two ways:1 (1) a. THAT book, you should purchase . b. Which book does Leslie think you should purchase ? c. This is the book which Leslie told me she thinks I should purchase . Transformational approaches posit a sequence of representations in which the filler is initially in the position notated by the underline in (1), which is then relocated, possibly via a series of movement steps, to its final position on the left of the highest clause. Schematically, the derivational approach can be illustrated in (2): (2) S ... ... S ... ... S ...XP... ⇒ S ... ... S ... ... XP S ...txp... ⇒ S ... ... XP S ... ... txp S ...txp...

Cross-linguistic Influence at Syntax-pragmatics Interface: A Case of OPC in Persian

Recent research in the area of Second Language Acquisition has proposed that bilinguals and L2 learners show syntactic indeterminacy when syntactic properties interface with other cognitive domains. Most of the research in this area has focused on the pragmatic use of syntactic properties while the investigation of compliance with a grammatical rule at syntax-related interfaces has not received...

Model Construction with External Constraints: An Interactive Journey from Semantics to Syntax

Mainstream development environments have recently assimilated guidance technologies based on constraint satisfaction. We investigate one class of such technologies, namely, interactive guided derivation of models, where the editing system assists a designer by providing hints about valid editing operations that maintain global correctness. We provide a semantics-based classification of such gui...

Extracting Selected Phrases through Constraint Satisfaction

We present in this paper a CHR based parsing methodology for parsing Property Grammars. This approach constitutes a flexible parsing technology in which the notions of derivation and hierarchy give way to the more flexible notion of constraint satisfaction between categories. It becomes then possible to describe the syntactic characteristics of a category in terms of satisfied and violated cons...

TAG Parsing as Model Enumeration

This paper introduces well-ordered derivation trees and makes use of this concept in a novel axiomatization of the TAG parsing problem as a constraint satisfaction problem. Contrary to prior approaches, our axiomatization focuses on the derivation trees rather than the derived trees. Well-ordered derivation trees are our primary models, whereas the derived trees serve solely to determine word o...

Compositional Derivation of Symmetries for Constraint Satisfaction

This paper reconsiders the problems of discovering symmetries in constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs). It proposes a compositional approach which derives symmetries of the applications from primitive constraints. Its key insight is the recognition of the special role of global constraints in symmetry detection. Once the symmetries of global constraints are available, it often becomes much ea...
